Gas Work Licence – Restricted to Gas Service Only
Scope of Gas Work:
- Activities Permitted: Service, repair, maintain, fix, disconnect, and reconnect: domestic and commercial gas appliances.
- Type of Appliances:

- Domestic, commercial, gas stoves, cooktops, combi ovens, ovens gas side of hot water system, gas heaters, woks, grills, caravan and marine gas appliances

Who Can Do This Course?
- Target Audience: Individuals involved in incidental gas servicing, repairs, and maintenance of Type A gas appliances.
- Requirements:
- Access to correct gas tools and test equipment eg:( Manometers, gas detectors ).
- Practical experience sign-off by a licensed gas service person.
- Ideally employed by a company servicing Type A gas appliances.
Do I Need to Be a Plumber?
- No: Historically, only plumbers could get Gas Licences, but today, having an electrical licence can be advantageous due to the electrical circuitry in many gas appliances.
Can I install a gas appliance?
- No ! This is a Gas Work licence ( Restricted to service only ) in Queensland the licence covers disconnecting and reconnecting the existing gas appliance and no installation is allowed.
Does this licence cover servicing Type B gas appliances?
- No ! The training, qualification and gas Licence for service, limits you to Type A gas appliance service, repairs and maintenance only.
Why Do I Need a Call of Trade or Trade for This Qualification?
- Necessity: The licence is intended for those already in a trade and not suitable for individuals without prior trade knowledge and skills. Access to a licensed gas fitter for practical experience is mandatory.
- Minimum Requirements: Students must meet a minimum level of knowledge and skills before enrolment. The first question is whether you have a suitable call of trade and access to a licensed gas fitter for practical experience during the training course.
The Course and Licencing Recognition:
- The Restricted Gas service course enables the successful participant to apply for a Queensland Gas Work Licence ( Restricted to service only )
- The QLD Gas Work Licence ( Restricted to service) is recognized/ mutually accepted in, NSW, ACT, SA, NT, WA, and Victoria (Refrigeration technicians).Note: at the time of writing this article

Trades or cross trades requiring to carry out incidental Gas appliance service, repairs and maintenance on Type A gas appliances only.

- This qualification is a great stepping stone for tradespersons aiming to expand their qualifications.
- Many students progress to complete Certificate III in Gas fitting, obtaining a full Gas fitting licence to install, commission and service Type A gas appliances, plus install Natural / LPG gas pipework, gas regulators and LPG cylinders.
