With the new mechanical services – medical gas licence requirements commencing on the 1st January 2020 we thought we would dive deeper and explore the number of options and pathways to achieve a Mechanical Services – Medical gas license.

There are many pathways, depending on your qualification, this blog covers the mechanical services pathway and specifically:

»  The Medical Gas Licence and
»  The Medical Gas Occupational Licence

Bizmatrix is listed as a Registered Training Organisation on the QBCC website, in particular with providing two of the technical requirements to achieve the medical gas licences/qualifications for the Mechanical services sector i.e. Gas Work Licence courses as required for the applications.

Scope of Works

»  Constructing, installing, replacing, repairing, altering, maintaining, testing or commissioning a medical gas system in a building
»  Installation of fire collars that is incidental to work mentioned above
» 
Incidental work of another class.

Before you sign up for any courses, please check the QBCC website to confirm you have chosen the correct pathway and requirements.

Note: There are many pathways and the information and or requirements could change without notice.

Experience requirements 

»  Prior to 1st January 2020 – 6 months of medical gas work experience
»  From 1st January 2022 – if you’re applying for a mechanical services – medical gas contractor or nominee supervisor licence you will need to demonstrate a minimum of 2 years’ experience, other than experience gained during an apprenticeship, in – 

          »  the scope of work for the class; or
          »  other work, if the commission considers experience in the other work is at least equivalent to experience in the scope of work for that class.

Technical requirements 

You must meet both 1 and 2 below:

1. One of the following:

CPC32713 Certificate III in Gas fitting

CPC32713 Certificate III in Gas fitting qualification, is nationally accredited  and is one of the technical requirements for the Mechanical services medical gas licence.

The qualification has 32 units and the training is held over 8-12 months. Applicants will be considered for RPL recognition of prior learning for any non gas subjects or units .

The course consists of around 100 hrs of online learning and assessments, regular Virtual classes and then four (4) X one (1) week blocks over a period of 6-8 months.

On the successful completion of the online and the face to face training and assessment, the student will be issued with a Certificate III in Gas Fitting Qualification that is one of the  requirements for the Medical gas licence.

Should the student like to pursue a Gas Work Licence (GWL) – the student is required to apply for a Gas Work Licence (interim) within 12 months of completing the Certificate III in Gas Fitting.

Then to progress to a Gas Work Licence the GWL (interim) holder must complete within three (3) years – 60 hours practical experience and four (4) Certificate IV gas units.

Note: The medical gas licence requires the CPC32713 Certificate III in Gas Fitting, qualification only! 

The Gas Work Licence may be an option, should the student like to pursue the Gas Work Licence option.

Other options available to fulfil this first course obligation also include:

»  Certificate III in Gas Fitting CPC32713
»  Certificate III in Plumbing Mechanical Services CPC32513
»  Certificate III in Plumbing CPC32413
»  another course the QBCC considers as equivalent
»  a qualification or statement of attainment of required competency for the class of licence; and

2. Both of the following courses:

»  CPCPMS3034A – Install medical gas pipeline system, and
»  CPCPCM2043A – Carry out WHS requirements **(this unit is included in the Bizmatrix Certificate III in Gas Fitting); or
»  a course/s the QBCC considers as equivalent
